This collection of short stories, poetry, artwork and encouraging messages was inspired by Gage, a fourteen year old boy facing surgery to remove an Ameloblastoma (a large and fast growing tumor usually found in the lower jaw.) A simple call out to a Facebook Group for authors and readers resulted in a collection of almost forty short stories, plus poetry and personalized artwork, jokes and other fun stuff to make recovery a little less painful.
**This review is from my son, Gage Bailey, age fourteen.
Hello! My name is Gage Bailey. I am fourteen and I have autism, even though it doesn’t bother me like it seems to bother other people. I also have a condition called Ameloblastoma. Basically, this is a tumor inside my jaw bone. We found out about my tumor last year. My mom writes books and she has lots of friends who also write. When her friends and her publishing company found out that I might have to have surgery to get rid of my tumor, they came up with a plan. They decided to write a book and give a copy to kids who are recovering from surgery. They also donate any money from copies they sell to the Ronald McDonald House for kids and their families.
I was shocked and happy when my copy of the book came in the mail! No one has ever done anything like this for me before. It took me a while to read it all, because there were so many stories inside! The short stories were all awesome. Any kid would love to have this book. Here are some of my favorite stories in the book:
Beauty by Christopher Beck
Danny & the Dream Catchers by Jonathan Gould
Day of the Living Pizza by Vickie Johnstone
The Enemy by Robert F. DeBurgh
Humanitarian by Susan Wells Bennett
Zombie Juice by DM and MA Drake
And so many more! I loved all the stories because they came from people who care. If you know a kid who may need surgery with a long, boring hospital stay, I think you should buy them this book. It will help pass the time and put a smile on their face! It sure put a big one on mine! I want to thank all the authors, illustrators, editors, and Inknbeans Press for putting this wonderful book together to help me and other kids. It’s the best gift I’ve ever received.
