Yep, it is that time. And like the banner reads: Serious Beta Readers Wanted. So, let me explain EXACTLY what I am looking for. Many times, there are people who sit these out thinking they don’t have anything to offer. Let me dispel a few myths.
MYTH #1: Beta Readers need to be English majors with doctorates in grammar and punctuation.
Okay, not that such a thing would not be helpful, but my Beta Readers are needed more to catch continuity errors and let me know (honestly) if the flow of the story is good. Yes, it is good to have those folks who catch my spelling and punctuation errors, but seeing it through a fan’s eyes and hearing if this could be a hit or miss is equally important.
MYTH #2: I have plenty of Beta Readers and probably don’t need anybody new.
The reality is that fresh eyes are always welcome. Having multiple POVs are great. And what one person sees as amazing, another person might see as “meh”. That is always good to know.
MYTH #3: I have to be a zombie fan.
Nope. While it is always nice to have the zombie readers on my team of Beta Readers, it is also good to have somebody who might not be into the genre. They may be surprised at what they read and discover something new…or they may simply be able to give me a VERY non-biased perspective about the story aspects of the book.
So, DEAD: Onset (Book One of the New DEAD series) is reaching a point where it is time to assemble my team of Beta Readers. Here is what i need you to be able to commit to for me. I will be sending you a chapter at least every other day (it might be every day towards the end…depending on my schedule). I will need you to read it and then get your notes back to me ASAP. After every three chapters have been worked through, I will send the revised versions for your eyes to examine. For one, it helps you see when and where your catches and corrections are put into use. Also, it lets you check one more time to see if there might still be something missed.
This is a very organic process that alloows you to actually see a book go through a final clean-up before it is released to the world. Part of the reward is that (for fans) you get to read this before anybody else. That is also why I will really need you to be diligent about going to Amazon (Goodreads too if you are part of that community) and post a release day review. I can’t stress how important those are. And here is the big catch on that side…it is OKAY if you DON’T really like the book. You are not being asked to pen a 5 star lie. I want you to be honest. And don’t forget to mention that you received an ARC (advance review copy) for review purposes from the author.
So, if you can accept the burden, then I invite you to step up to the plate. I am cutting off my team at 10 members. There are a couple of stalwarts that are already on the team if they ask, but after that I will simply choose randomly from those who ask to be a part (and that is supposing that I actually get 10 people to offer their services). The adventure begins on Monday, September 19th. If you want in, then email me at:
firstname.lastname@example.org with DEAD: Onset Beta Team in the subject. I need the actual email so that I have it when I create my mailing list for the Beta Readers that are part of the team. Commenting on the social media post won’t get you on the team (although feel free to express your excitement on any and all social media platforms).
