Writing is how I make my living. That being said, I consider my readers to be my employers. I try to give them what they want, and I feel that, while nothing is ever perfect, I do believe that I do an okay job.
Tomorrow marks the release of the 12th book in the DEAD series. It is hard to believe, but the saga has finally reached its conclusion. You probably already know this, so I am wasting your time talking about it. So let’s get down to what I really want to talk about.
The headline in today’s blog is “Real Fear”. That is what I am feeling. I can admit it because I have made it a point of not being fake with you, my readers. I have always tried to be real. Well, fear is what I am REALLY experiencing. I will share some numbers with you that many people keep private, but I have no issues with sharing. When a new DEAD from the series hits the market, I can usually expect close to 1,000 units sold in that first month. Keep in mind that for titles priced over the magic number of $2.99, Amazon pays 70% royalties. (That drops to 30% if a book is priced under that amount which may help you see some of the economics that we deal with on this side.) Now, consider a That Ghoul Ava title. It usually sells 30-40 copies the first month. The DEAD: Snapshot titles come in around 200-275. So, no need to turn this into a math story problem…I think you see the difference.
Now, I am hoping that the That Ghoul Ava books will begin to gain some traction. Also, likewise with the DEAD: Snapshot titles. (My non-horror title UnCivil War: A Modern Day Race War in the United States, sells about 3-5 copies a month in case you are curious.) But the reality is that my bell cow is dry. I won’t write book 13 and disrespect you, my readers, with an obvious grab for cash. I do have a few things that might get a bump like a possible trilogy (or longer depending) that tells the story of Kevin and Catie during their travels across the country. Also, Adam the vigilante will likely see a few book run of his own.
But can you understand why fear is a big emotion for me at the moment? This is my living. So, I do hope that those of you who have not yet dipped a toe in the DEAD: Snapshot books or the That Ghoul Ava titles will consider it. This is a fickle business and I would rather be writing than anything else. But I have reached the scary part. This is where you decide to keep me on or cut me loose. I hope you decide on the former. And maybe we can treat this like a bit of a performance review. How about if you give me some helpful suggestions on how I can be a better employee.
I want to conclude by offering you a free audio copy of DEAD: Snapshot–Portland, Oregon. All you need to do is email me and ask. And here is a bonus…if you get a friend or six who have never experienced an audio book but are willing to try to join you…I will hook everybody up. If they email me with ‘MY VIRGIN EARS’ in the subject, I will hook them up with any THREE of my titles PLUS DEAD: Snapshot–Portland, Oregon!
Last but not least…HAPPY HALLOWEEN!
