Ava Birch is a ghoul.
Still wading through the world of Supernaturals, she is discovering that daytime soaps have nothing on the drama in her life. Lisa Jenkins, her best friend and human companion, is training to join an organization that tried to eradicate every ghoul on the planet. Morgan, her so-called adviser, continues to answer in as little detail as possible…and now the faeries are causing people to have orgies in the middle of a shopping mall.
Welcome to the REAL WORLD of the Supernaturals where all that stuff you read is based on fact.
By Alan Wilson
In this Ava novel, the new ghoul on the block is forced to dive into the ever-more complex world of The Supernatural and, together with a few other things, her ghoulish training wheels are removed.
This time around Ava is charged with cleaning up a complex political mess that has boiled over between the Faeries and the Goblins with Templars stirring the pot from the sidelines. The story begins with deceptive simplicity and ends with a tangled web of jealousies, traditional enmities, betrayals…culminating in a Die Hard (see I did it again) combat scene…from the rubble of which no one really emerges as a winner. For what Ava gains in her ghoulish skills, she loses and has a butcher’s bill to pay in other ways.
Begins light but becomes progressively darker. Overall, more serious and complex than Ava’s earlier adventures.
Sure, Ava’s internal reflections are as funny as ever, but I reckon she’s compensating for what’s going on around her.
At this stage of the game, I think she needs a vacation to decompress….how about Alaska in mid-winter to visit a traditional burial ground? You see what I did there? Yay for me!
